The strangest grass I ever did see...

I saw the funniest looking grass along the side of the road weeks ago...so I picked a few straws and took them back home for further inspection and hopeful identification.
Fresh off, it is green with purple little bulb-like seeds that each have a few hairs.
Mature, the green fades to tan the the bulb/seed is a dark brown with a husk-like shell around it.
Should you brush too hard against it, the little seeds will float free leaving you with the shell of straw.
Any ideas what kind of grass this is?  I found it along a disturbed area, and the most similar I could come to was Bulbous bluegrass, which it isn't.  But I have learned a lot about native grasses of the area, so there's that...
